Why MyOwnTeach exists

We build software for a living. MyOwnTeach started with one question: why does a teacher who met a student two years ago still give up a share of every lesson to the site that introduced them?

What bothered us

Teaching a language well takes years. A good teacher and a regular student can carry on for a long time, often across borders and time zones.

A marketplace is a fine way to meet that first student. But most keep taking a share of every lesson afterwards, for as long as the student stays. The teacher does the teaching, the student pays the fee, and a company in the middle keeps a cut of work it no longer does much for.

The tools to run a practice yourself exist, but they're scattered: a calendar, a spreadsheet, a payment app, a video link in an email. So we put them in one place.

What we believe

Teachers should keep their fee. We take 0% of lessons. You pay a flat monthly fee for the software, or nothing on Free.

A fair price depends on where you live. Pro is priced in three regional bands. Teachers in richer countries pay more so teachers elsewhere pay less. Robin Hood, more or less.

The students are yours. You hold the records and the contact details. Export them whenever you like, and leave whenever you like.

It should work where cards don't. Stripe Connect isn't available in every country. Where it isn't, you record the payments you take yourself, and the app still runs your timetable and records.

What we promise teachers

Specifics, since you've probably read promises before.

0% commission on every lesson, on every plan. Stripe's processing fee applies to card payments and goes to Stripe. We keep none of it.

Free covers up to 5 active students, with no card needed and no time limit.

Your data stays exportable. Leave whenever you like and take it with you.

No vetting and no rankings. We're a tool, not a marketplace, so there's nothing to rank you for.

What we promise students

If you learn with a teacher who uses MyOwnTeach:

Your teacher sets the price and gets all of it, less any card processing fee.

You see lesson times in your own time zone, on the booking page and in every reminder.

We don't sell your information or use it for ads. Your teacher is responsible for your data, and we process it for them under GDPR.

Where we're going

MyOwnTeach starts with language teachers who teach adults online, where students sit in other time zones, pay in other currencies, and the admin piles up.

We'll add things slowly and in the open. Some of what you might want isn't here yet, and we'd rather say so than promise it early.

What won't change: a flat fee, no commission, and your students staying yours.
